The HD rollout is farthest along in the top 100 markets but sharply lower elsewhere. A chart to be published by Radio World indicates that HD Radio is available in 36% of the top ten markets. In markets of rank 150 or lower fewer than 4% currently offer the new format.     more>>

During the three-month period ending 30 June the satcaster increased revenue 22 percent year over year to $277 million. The quarter net loss narrowed to $176 million, a 23 percent improvement compared with the same period last year. Said outgoing XM boss Hugh Panero, "During the second quarter, XM's revenue grew and losses narrowed. XM added more automotive gross subscriber additions than during any quarter in the company's history." In the quarter the satcaster reported gross subscriber additions of 942 thousand compared with 926 thousand a year ago.     more>>

Chrysler is more Sirius than ever.

The automaker expects to install Sirius satrads in more than 70% of its vehicle production for 2008, an increase of 40% compared with the previous model year. Chrysler installed Sirius in about 40 percent of its 2007 models. In the 2008 model year Sirius satrads will be included as a standard feature on most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models.     more>>

Audi is getting Sirius in Canada.

The automaker has announced that the satcaster's satrads would be available as factory standard equipment on all model year 2008 Audi S4, A6 4.2, S6, A8, S8, Q7 4.2 and R8 models. Audi Canada is offering the units with a three month subscription. Diego Ramos, Head of Audi Canada says of the deal, "Audi is proud to offer Sirius Satellite Radio as factory standard equipment on some of our most popular models including the exciting new R8. Sirius Satellite Radio is a natural fit with Audi's premier vehicle line and now more Audi customers in Canada will be able to hear and experience Sirius for themselves."     more>>

Both present listeners with statistics on what programming is making it onto HD Radio. "As the list of radio stations included on the RadioSherpa Program Guide grows, listeners are increasingly looking for additional guidance on what music to select," says Stephanie Norton, RadioSherpa co-founder. "We thought that a good start would be to show what songs the radio stations were promoting most heavily, as well as what new songs radio programmers felt were interesting enough to add to their playlists. I cannot think of an easier way to provide listeners with highly qualified recommendations...particularly for lesser-known or brand new music found on many of the HD2 channels."     

Don Imus may not be Sirius but he is apparently returning to radio.

The apparent venue is expected to be his old home, WFAN in New York. The reason for his return is obvious to most analysts -- money. Despite the controversy generated by his unfortunate comments about the Rutgers' Women's Basketball Team, Imus has been a major source of revenue for CBS. In addition, he's suing the network, which could be liable for up to $40 million should it lose. CBS boss Les Moonves discounts any suggestion of a reprieve. The I-Man is expected to return, somewhere, by the end of August.     more>>

National Public Radio is taking measures to update its coverage maps and to review the quality and characteristics of HD receivers. Coverage maps for each NPR station are being produced using enhanced receiver test beds to determine each station's analog and digital coverage areas and to look for ways stations can enhance digital coverage. The organization has also reviewed receivers made by RadioShack, Radiosophy, Directed and Sangean.

In the statement, Miller says, "Some have suggested that since satellite radio is a luxury, federal antitrust and communications officials should adopt a hands-off attitude toward the proposed XM/Sirims merger. Webcasters have been negotiating with SoundExchange since losing their appeal in the courts (see story below) over a higher royalty that some have already begun to pay. An interim deal has been reached under which members of the Digital Media Association , which includes the industry's biggest players, accepted a SoundExchange offer to cap a $500-per-channel administrative fee. In return, webcasters would agree to more accurate and extensive reporting requirements.     more>>

Despite continuing losses, XM affiliate Canadian Satellite Radio is continuing to invest in building its subscriber base.

The satcaster has opened a new call center in El Paso, TX, which is expected to have about 300 employees within four months. Operated by Houston-based GC Services the call center is one of eight in United States catering to XM customers. "We've found the work force in El Paso to be so good, with such good customer service skills. So, we made a conscious decision to expand in El Paso," said CG Service vice president of customer care Kathy O'Brien.     

Prospective auto buyers with an interest in HD Radio may want to move either to Detroit or Dallas.

Two car dealerships in those cities are promoting the new format with special offers. Dick Genthe's Chevrolet in Detroit is offering a free HD Radio with the purchase of a used car. The DavidMcDavid Automotive Group in Dallas is selling HD Radios at all seven of its dealerships. It is the only dealership group to do so in Texas.     more>>

Webcasters have lost their appeal in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The court decided not to grant a stay of royalty payment pending court deliberation, meaning a collective payment of more than $1 billion. The amount is based on a ruling earlier this year by the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board (see RUsirius.com story dated 3 May 2007). The SaveNetRadio coalition is currently urging its supporters to lobby congressmen to back the Internet Radio Equality Act, a measure bringing Internet fees in line with those paid by satcasters. Comments by some Congressional leaders, however, have indicated little interest in helping the webcasters (see RUsirius.com story dated 29 June 2007).     more>>

The National Association of Broadcasters has filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission to deny what it is calling "the proposed merger-to-monopoly" between XM and Sirius.

Helio Costa, that country's Minister of Communications has said that the HD Radio standard could be adopted by September and transmissions allowed at the beginning of 2008. According to a report by Brazilian news outlet Tela Viva, Costa has indicated that Brazil will likely adopt a hybrid of IBOC for AM and FM and Digital Radio Mondiale for shortwave. Costa denies that a decision has been made, saying, "The project is fundamental for the growth and integration of Brazil. We are seeking support and financing, in the same manner we approached digital television."     more>>

The satcaster is premiering "The Chairman's Hour" on 7 July at 5 PM(ET) hosted by the man himself. The program is assembled from rare material taken from the the Sinatra family archives. A special preview broadcast takes place on 4 July at 5 PM(ET) on Siriusly Sinatra (channel 75).

Of all the big radio groups the company has been the most aggressive in their digital rollouts so far. Almost 90% of Bonneville stations are on the air with HD Radio according ot a report prepared for Radio World by BIA Financial Networks. Greater Media is at a 70% rollout and Clear Channel has the most number of HD stations, 375.     more>>
